A dynamic and moving study of love in the 21st century from the director of The Constant Gardener.

Combining impeccable filmmaking credentials and an intriguing premise, 360 is a dynamic and moving roundelay of love in the 21st century. Director Fernando Meirelles (City of God, The Constant Gardener, Blindness) and writer Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon) give us a distinctly modern take on Arthur Schnitzlerís classic play Reigen (La Ronde), the starting point for this interlocking series of encounters between people in different cities and countries.
Schnitzlerís original used ten pairs of lovers from different sections of Viennese society to show how sexual relationships can transgress social boundaries. Morgan and Meirelles broaden this out, as the film weaves through Vienna, Bratislava, Paris, London, Rio, Phoenix and Denver into a single, seamless narrative. An ambitious young woman sees sex as a way to escape her background; a respectable widower wrestles with the conflict between desire and religious principles; a man grieving his long-lost daughter forges a bond with a heartbroken girl; a married couple come to see each other with fresh eyes. Individual stories connect, choices are made and directions taken but, as always in Meirellesí films, these are grounded in a sense of place. Each city the characters pass through feels real, vividly so.
As the narrative unfolds, what is also revealed is a terrific and well-chosen cast including Rachel Weisz, Jude Law, Jamel Debbouze, Ben Foster and Moritz Bleibtreu, the ensemble nature of the piece encouraging strong performances across the board. Even so, Anthony Hopkins is outstanding in his affecting portrayal of a father unable to move on. Meirellesí skill as a visual storyteller is much in evidence, and though helped by his locations, it is his composition within the frame that is most striking, complemented by some judicious use of split screens. The film also has a tremendous sense of motion, literally as its characters cross countries and continents, but metaphorically too, as each makes their own emotional journey.

Bryan Cranston & Jude Law Interview For ‘Contagion’ Source Flick and Bits

‘Contagion’ centres on the threat posed by a rapidly progressing deadly disease and an international team of doctors contracted by the CDC to deal with the outbreak. As the fast-moving epidemic grows, the worldwide medical community races to find a cure and control the panic that spreads faster than the virus itself. As the virus spreads around the world, ordinary people struggle to survive in a society coming apart. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the film also stars Matt Damon, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Lawrence Fishbourne, Demitri Martin, Sanaa Lathan and Elliott Gould. ‘Contagion’ opens September 9th in the US, and October 21st in the UK. In-depth interviews will be posted next week.
You really get involved with the many characters in this film….
Bryan Cranston: It’s complex, it’s easy to follow because you feel for these people. Even though ‘Contagion’ deals largely on a plot driven story, without the human involvement you wouldn’t get the connection, or feel the connection. So whether it’s Marion Cotillard’s character in Hong Kong, or Matt Damon’s character trying to save his daughters life in Minnesota. What you don’t realise is the conflict at the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), where you have these Doctors, and in my characters place, Military Men, the incredibly pressurised task of first finding out what we’re dealing with, trying to find a component of it, then manufacturing it in a controlled environment so that we can start attacking it to kill it. The characters are key.
Jude, can you tell us about your character’s convictions, and his view on government controls?
Jude Law: He’s a campaigner for freedom of speech, but also conspiracy theories. I think unfortunately his ego and his pride get in the way of his convictions.
I think he has an inbuilt reaction to government backed vaccination programmes, and government backed research, he has a cynical view of the legal process, and the governmental process behind investigation on medical issues. So I think that often leads him into areas of alternatives, then raising alternatives and watching them be covered up. Where he’s very interesting to this story is that he does actually get the lead on everyone else, he sees something before everyone else, therefore he has the run on them for quite a while.

How was it working with Steven Soderbergh?
Bryan Cranston: Steven Soderbergh is great in the way that he listens to suggestions. He’s very fast, one of the fastest directors I’ve ever worked with, he moves quickly and that’s great. So when an actor goes home after ten hours, as opposed to fourteen or fifteen hours, that helps a lot, you’re much more refreshed the next day, then the following day, then the day after that. You can bring more energy to the role. He really is great.
Jude Law: I’ve wanted to work with Steven Soderbergh for many years, many many years (laughs). It’s been a really terrific experience, he brings incredible composure, and confidence, and fun to a set. He has a very unique process of…..because he’s also looking as director of photography and operator, he has a very beautiful and intimate way of choosing his shots. I felt that absolutely intensified the relationship a director has with an actor, where they’re viewing you absolutely in the moment.
The idea of this type of outbreak happening is terrifying, what are your thoughts on the possibilities of it actually happening?
Jude Law: The overriding impression from all of the experts I got from this was that it’s a matter of when, not if. I suppose if you just step back and look at it historically, these things have happened in the past, and not that long ago. We’ve had little scares in the last few years, it seems absolutely plausible, actually more so now because of travel increase, international travel increases. Therefore the ability of bugs and virus’ getting on planes and travelling half way around the world.

Rachel Weisz, Jude Law's '360' to open London Film Festival

Rachel Weisz and Jude Law's romantic drama 360 will open the 55th BFI London Film Festival on October 12.

Director Fernando Meirelles's film portrays a series of interconnected relationships across the globe in a single narrative. The story begins in Vienna before moving on to Paris, London, Bratislava, Rio, Denver and Phoenix.

Anthony Hopkins and Ben Foster co-star in 360, which Oscar-nominated screenwriter Peter Morgan adapted from Arthur Schnitzler's play.

360 marks a return to the London Film Festival for Meirelles, whose The Constant Gardener opened the festival in 2005.

"In the past decade I've been to the BFI London Film Festival six times, some of them as a guest, and some as part of the audience," the Brazilian filmmaker said. "I am very honoured that 360, an intimate film that talks about our options in life, has been chosen to open the festival this year."

LFF artistic director Sandra Hebron added: "With its impeccable film making credentials and intriguing premise, 360 combines masterful visual story-telling with a modern and moving narrative, helped by strong performances from a terrific ensemble cast."

Hebron will step down from her role after being with the BFI Festival's department since 1997.

The BFI London Film Festival runs from October 12-27.

New Looks At Rachel Weisz, Jude Law, Anthony Hopkins & Ben Foster In Fernando Meirelles’ ‘360’

It has been a few years since we last heard from “City Of God” director Fernando Meirelles. After his excellent 2005 thriller “The Constant Gardner,” the director brought an adaptation of Jose Saramago‘s “Blindness” to the big screen that failed to quite capture the terror of the novel, but his latest should find him back on firm footing. Rachel Weisz, Jude Law, Anthony Hopkins, Ben Foster, Jarnel Debouze, Karl Markovic, Maria Flor and Juliano Cazarr have come together for the erotic/dramatic thriller “360” and with the film set to premiere is few short weeks, a batch of new photos have arrived.
Penned by Peter Morgan, the film is a retelling of the classic Arthur Schnitzler play “Reigen.” The play, perhaps the best known work by Schnitzler (who also wrote the short story that served as the basis for Stanley Kubrick‘s “Eyes Wide Shut”) has been adapted a number of times, from Max Ophuls’ 1950 film “La Ronde” to David Hare‘s 1998 play “The Blue Room,” which starred Nicole Kidman and Iain Glen. It has a simple and rather brilliant conceit; it’s made up of several short scenes between couples, who are shown before or after a sexual liaison. After each scene, one character from the pairing is then shown with another partner, who is then shown with another partner, and so on, until the promiscuity comes full circle. Certainly it’s some very charged material and these new pics give us a look at the ensemble collected to tell the tale.
“360” will make its world premiere at TIFF next month, but the film is currently without a distributor so you’ll likely be waiting a while yet to see this in your local theater. Official logline below. [TIFF]
Director Fernando Meirelles (City of God) reunites with his Constant Gardener star Rachel Weisz, who stars opposite Jude Law, Anthony Hopkins, and Ben Foster in this uncompromising dramatic thriller fuelled by the notion of how sexual relationships can transgress social boundaries.

Jude Law upcoming move 360 is officially in the list of the Toronto International Film Festival

Jude looks old with the grey hair..I'm sure they did some makeup (wrinkles) to make him look that way!

The Toronto International Film Festival just announced their 2011 line-up this AM, a deluge of cinematic riches and thanks to their website, we have an overabundance of first look riches too. So here’s your first look at Jude Law and Rachel Weisz in “360,” the new film byFernando Meirelles, known for “City of God” and “The Constant Gardener.”
The cast also includes Anthony Hopkins, Ben Foster, Jarnel Debouze, Karl Markovic, Maria Flor, Juliano Cazarr and it was penned by Peter Morgan (”The Queen”).
The only TIFF info listed so far is the brief synopsis in the press release line-up.
Inspired by Arthur Schnitzler’s classic “La Ronde,” in 360, director Fernando Meirelles and screenwriter Peter Morgan combine a modern and dynamic roundelay of original stories into one, linking characters: from different cities and countries in a vivid, suspenseful and deeply moving tale of love in the 21st century. Starting in Vienna, the film beautifully weaves through Paris, London, Bratislava, Rio, Denver and Phoenix into a single, mesmerizing narrative. Stars Jude Law, Anthony Hopkins, Rachel Weisz and Ben Foster.
The other slice of info is that, while called a relationship drama originally, the TIFF site describes it as a “dramatic thriller fueled by the notion of how sexual relationships can transgress social boundaries.”
No word on a release date yet as there is no distributor yet. That will likely land during TIFF ‘11. More info when we have it.
