London's Young Vic Premieres Latest Short Film Project; Future Films to Feature Jude Law and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

London's Young Vic's latest in its project of short films inspired by a Young Vic production is "Bed Trick," a short film directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins inspired by his recent version of The Changeling. It is available to see now on websites of the Young Vic and The Guardian.

The project, which is organized in partnership with The Guardian newspaper and supported by Bloomberg, will comprise four short films, with Jude Law to star in the next one later this year, written by Belarus Free Theatre and Laura Wade. It will be followed by a film written and directed by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who stars in Aimé Césaire’s A Season in the Congo at the Young Vic this summer.
The project began in March 2012 with "Epithet," a short film inspired by Edward Bond’s Bingo starring Patrick Stewart, directed by Angus Jackson, written by Mark O. Rowe and filmed by BAFTA award-winning cinematographer David Higgs. It was followed by "Nora" in October 2012, a short inspired by Carrie Cracknell's A Doll's House at the Young Vic, written by Cracknell and Nick Payne and starring Hattie Morahan in the title role. Since its launch it has been viewed over 40,000 times.

According to press materials, the project offers a unique creative collaboration which gives exceptional theatrical talent an opportunity to work in the field of film. The brief for each film is simple: to make a short film inspired by a Young Vic show which is bold in its approach.  By pairing them with leading professionals in the film industry, theatre directors are provided with a platform to showcase their talent to a large international audience on the Guardian website. The films are edited by the Guardian's multimedia team and are hosted on both the Guardian and Young Vic websites at youngvic.org/YVshorts and guardian.co.uk/stage.

In a press statement, David Lan, artistic director of the theatre, commented, "If we have a policy at the Young Vic it’s to do things we’ve never done before.  We’d never made films.  Offering our directors a chance to make these short films has moved us all on in excitingly unexpected ways.  We have three physical stages in the Young Vic.  Our short films are becoming our fourth.  We are particularly grateful for the support Bloomberg have given us, enabling this brilliant new lease of creative life."

Jude Law is all smiles while exiting the Bowery Hotel on Friday (April 26) in New York City.
“I’m writing to urge the panel to uphold this ban, which is in line with the wishes of compassionate people all around the world, including the majority of European citizens,” the 40-year-old actor recently wrote in a letter to rally for a seal fur ban.
Jude added, “Even local sentiment is turning, and a lack of markets has led Canadian officials to seriously examine whether the slaughter should end.”

Focus Acquires Hot Cannes Title ‘Black Sea’ With Kevin Macdonald Directing Jude Law

As distributors line their coffers with big films for Cannes, Focus Features has grabbed one, acquiring worldwide rights to Black Sea, an adventure thriller that Kevin Macdonald will direct with Jude Law starring. It’s contemporary, and Law will play a submarine captain who is laid off by a salvage company and makes a deal with a shadowy backer to look for a storied sunken sub reputed to be loaded with gold at the bottom of the Black Sea. Since this find would get him even with his ex-bosses, he puts together a crew of English and Russian sailors for the task, taking off to uncharted depths with his motley crew. The closer they get to the prize, the riskier it becomes to trust one another.

Law just starred for Focus Features in Anna Karenina. Film 4 developed, co-produced and is co-financing Black Sea with Focus, and Macdonald has committed to make it next. Macdonald, who helmed the Oscar-winning docu One Day In September and Touching the Void, and who directed The Last King Of Scotland and State Of Play and The Eagle, last helmed the Saoirse Ronan/Tom Holland-starrer How I Live Now and the docu Marley. Focus holds worldwide rights — excluding the U.K. free-TV rights held by Film4, and international sales will begin at Cannes. Macdonald and Charles Steel are producing. Dennis Kelly, who recently authored the book of the acclaimed stage musical adaptation of Matilda, is writing the Black Sea script.

Add Black Sea to the Tarsem-directed Ryan Reynolds-starrer Selfles and the Olivier Assayas-directed Sils Maria with Juliette Binoche/Mia Wasikowska (IFC prebought domestic rights) as star-driven films that should catch the fancy of offshore distributors in a couple weeks on the Croisette.
